Coming Out

Coming out is when you let other people know that you identify as LGBTQ+. By coming out, LGBTQ+ folk may feel more comfortable and freer to express their sexual and/or gender identity to those around them.

Should I come out?

Coming out is completely up to you and should be done on your own terms. It can be a gradual process, where you come out to a few trusted friends or family, and then slowly come out to more people. You might consider coming out when you feel safe and confident with your identity. For many people, coming out is not a safe option. You might risk losing friends, family members or your job, even if you live in a place that has protections. If you do not feel like you want to come out, that is your choice. Coming out is not a necessary step to identify as LGBTQ+.

How do I come out?

There is no right way or best way to come out. It will depend on your specific situation and will look differently for everyone. For some people, coming out can be a very positive experience and for others it can be risky and possibly dangerous. Not everyone will choose to come out. Remember that no matter what, you always deserve love and support for who you are! If you choose to come out and don’t find support immediately from your family and friends, try looking online or for an LGBTQ+ organization near you where you can find people who understand and support you.
